Predictors of Communication Satisfaction During Performance Appraisal Interviews

Timothy M. Downs

California State University, Los Angeles

The following study investigates the relationship between employee perceptions of communication behaviors and satisfaction with communication that occurred during a recent performance appraisal interview. In association with communication satisfaction the relationship between communication training and the amount of time elapsed between the appraisal interview and participation in this survey were also investigated. Results indicate that perceptions of understanding and the quality of communication are significant predictors of satisfaction with communication during the appraisal interview. Implications for training in the use of communication skills to improve communication during the performance appraisal interview are discussed.
