A Communication Model Based on the Conduit MetaphorWhat Do We Know and What Do We Take for Granted?University of Alberta This article extends Axley's recent discussion of the "conduit metaphor" of communication. A communications model is presented and its elements are critically examined from theoretical and empirical perspectives. The article explores certain "taken for granted" assumptions about the nature and causes of communication difficulties, suggests reasons why managers may not be convinced that miscommunication is an important organizational problem, and outlines a research program.
